Function and Tasks:

– Studying nutrition requirements and developing feed formulation and technology for manufacturing aqua-feed appropriate to each growing stage and feeding behavior of aquatic animal species cultured in southern Vietnam;

– Studying and applying advanced post-harvest and processing technologies in fisheries and aquaculture production and using their by-products for value-added products;

– Transferring food post-harvest and processing technologies in fisheries and aqua-feed technologies in aquaculture;

– Producing and doing business in aqua-feed, fisheries products and equipment related to post-harvest and aqua-feed technology; and

– Providing training, laboratory analysis, experimental trials and consulting services in fisheries post-harvest, processing and aqua-feed technologies.

Activities and main outputs:

– Developing and formulating technology for aqua-feed production for life stages (fingerling, grow-out, pre-broodstock, broodstock) of key species cultured in southern Vietnam such as striped catfish (Pangasianodon hypophthalmus), black tiger shrimp (Penaeus monodon), giant freshwater prawn (Macrobrachium rosenbergii), tilapia (Oreochromis sp.), cobia (Rachycentron canadum) and sea bass (Lates calcarifer);

– Studying and applying supplementary agents such as micro-elements, enzymes and probiotics in feed formulation to enhance feed quality and efficacy;

– Developing technologies for producing processed food (such as canned fish, smoked fish, fish sausage,….) and value-added products (such as collagen, calcium powder,….) from by-products of catfish processing;

– Producing and supplying various feed for striped catfish, cobia, shrimp and other aqua-feed as requested by farmers and aquaculturists;

– Setting up and transferring on-farm feed production lines and technology for individual farms;

– Developing and improving processing technologies for value-added and functional food from fish (such as canned fish, smoked fish, fermented fish products, food ingredients, surimi and surimi-based products);

– Studying the extraction of valuable bioactive compounds from fish and fish by-products such as gelatin, collagen, chitin, chitosan, fish protein hydrolysates (FPH), biopeptides, fish oil and enzymes;

– Researching optimal utilization of fish by-products from the fishery industry;

– Studying technology and equipment to reduce fishery post-harvest losses;

– Conducting testing experiments for newly introduced materials/ aqua-feed, and other products used in aquaculture; and

– Training as well as chemical and microbiological testing services for quality control of food, biological products and fishery products.
