HISTORY

The Research Institute for Aquaculture No. 2 (RIA2) was established on 22 December 1976 as the Sub-Institute for Marine Fisheries No. 1 which mainly focused on marine fisheries research. In 1979, it was renamed as the Sub-Institute for Fisheries Research No. 1 and upgraded as RIA2 in 1983 under the umbrella of the Ministry of Fisheries (MoFi) with its main research work related to aquaculture development. Since 2007, it has belonged to the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development (MARD), which MoFi was merged into.

RIA2 is a key organisation for research and development of aquaculture technologies and  related fields of fisheries in southern Vietnam. It has built up fruitful cooperation with many international institutions and organisations such as ACIAR, World Fish Center, NACA, SEAFDEC, AIT, HAKI, DFID, AIMS and universities such as Gent, Wageningen, Auburn, Stirling, QUT, UMB, UNSW, Griffith University and Charles Sturt University.

Research staff of RIA2 currently consist of 14 with doctorates, 49 with master’s degrees and 74 with bachelor’s degrees. Most post-graduates have gained their professional education from foreign universities and largely contributed to RIA2’s achievements.
