Evaluation of the base population for selection progrmam on black tiger shrimp Penaeus monodon

The base population (G0) for a selective breeding programs on Black tiger shrimp (Penaeus monodon) was generated from a fully diallel cross of four founder strains collected from different geographic regions, that were originated as wild and domesticated individuals

In the G0, there were 69 families were produced from 16 crosses. These families were cultured in the Research central in bio-security raceways and on earthen ponds in the Central (Nha Trang), Southwest (Bac Lieu) and Southeast (Ba Ria) of Vietnam. Evaluation of growth performance in a diallel cross at the Research Central suggested that there was an existence of hybrid vigour. Crosses between domesticated strains with wild strains showed significantly better growth. Mild and positive G x E interaction was also found in this study and this will need to be considered in future breeding program on Black tiger shrimp.
